If you haven’t already figured out, K-pop is not your typical music genre. With K-pop comes an increase of dedication that is typically unheard of in the United States and the rest of the world. K-pop fans take it seriously and with that comes extra quirks that make K-pop stand out as one of the most interactive music genres ever!

Do you want to be a true K-pop fan? Let’s learn some K-pop lingo by using 2PM as an example!

Stanning is an essential part of being any K-pop fan, whether you are into groups or solo artists. Usually applied to K-pop groups, to stan a group is to favorite the group for their music, music videos, live performances, and more. You’re essentially investing more time to the group in comparison to other groups.

For example, I stan 2PM. 2PM debuted in 2008 and is a six-member boy group that is known for their strong vocals, catchy music, handsome visuals, and sexy choreography. 2PM has been in the K-pop music industry for years and have multiple songs that show off their incredible talent. But, let’s share the song that made me an official stan of 2PM, ‘Promise (I’ll be).’

Once you start stanning a group, you can then start biasing a certain member based on whatever you prefer, whether it’s their visuals and/or dancing, rapping, and singing abilities. It’s whatever you want as a stanner of the group! Personally, I tend to bias the main vocalist of the group, but there are exceptions for some groups.

In 2PM, my bias is definitely Jun. K, who is well known for his incredibly strong raspy voice that is highlighted in each 2PM song. He’s also an incredible dancer, composer, producer, writer, and performer. To say the least, I’ve been a huge fan of Jun. K since I discovered 2PM and that is why he would be considered my bias in 2PM.

Jun. K even has a successful solo career that highlights his voice and his music is heavily influenced by R&B.

Within each major K-pop group (and some soloists), each fandom is given a specific name that is picked by the group and the company. Each fan name is carefully picked out and has a meaning behind it that helps the fans feel closer to their favorite groups. 2PM’s fandom is called ‘Hottest' and has two meanings. 2PM gets its name from the idea that 2PM is considered the 'hottest' time of the day and also because the members of 2PM are hot (I mean, duh!). So, the fans are considered the 'hottest' fans and that's where the name derives from (logic, right?!). Okay, some names ARE more meaningful, but hey…who wouldn’t want to be called ‘Hottest’?!

The official fandom color is an important part of any K-pop group identity and matches the theme of the K-pop group. 2PM is known for their sensual style of music and mystery, which is represented through their official color, gray.

When a group has an official name, fans attending their concerts or live performances will wear that color and have a designated light-stick. Yes, you heard that right, light stick. Each group in K-pop also has a carefully designed light-stick that fans wave while their group performs!

It's always cool to see all the different merchandise that arises from this K-pop lingo and definitely keeps the genre always entertaining and interesting. There is other lingo, but understanding which groups you stan, your biases, fandom names, and group colors are definitely a start!
